Directions: Solve the following problems. All written work must be your own. See the course syllabus for detailed rules.

  1. [5.4] Let Cn be the nth Catalan number. Recall that Cn = 1 n+1( 2n n) and Cn satisfies the recurrence C0 = 1 and Cn = ∑ ⁡ k=1nCk−1Cn−k for n ≥ 1.

Let An be the set of permutations (x1,…,xn) of [n] that do not contain three entries xi,xk,xj such that i < k < j and xi < xj < xk. Let an = |An|. Our aim is to prove that the sequences (a0,a1,…) and (C0,C1,…) are the same sequence, meaning that an = Cn.

    1. Let k and n be integers such that 1 ≤k ≤n. Let An,k be the set of permutations (x1,…,xn) ∈An such that xk = n. Prove that |An,k| = ak−1an−k.
    2. Let n be a positive integer. Prove that an = ∑ ⁡ k=1nak−1an−k.
    3. Explain why this implies that an = Cn for all n.
  2. [8.1] Use inclusion/exclusion to find a formula for the number of surjective functions f from {1,…,n} onto {1,2,3,4}.
  3. [10.1.13] Prove that d1,…,dp is graphic if and only if p − 1 −d1,…,p − 1 −dp is graphic.
  4. [10.2.1] Let x and y be vertices of a graph.

    1. Suppose that there is a closed walk containing both x and y. Must there be a closed trail containing both x and y?
    2. Suppose that there is a closed trail containing both x and y. Must there be a cycle containing both x and y?
